It is recommended that while doing repairs to the cooling system of outboard motors special attention be given to the condition of the water pump housing and plate.  Due to sediments in most waterways it is common to see grooves cut into the impeller plate as well as the housing or its liner if applicable.  Quite often the housing will appear pitted as well.  If just the impeller is replaced it most probably will have a shortened life span, therefore manufacturers have put together kits to make the job last longer and work more efficiently.  Individual parts are still available in any event.
